One of his greatest achievements is his ability as a switch hitter, considered one of the best in the game’s history, leading him to be nicknamed “Steady Eddie”. As one of 12 children, he and his siblings made up their own competitive baseball team so it was no surprise when he became a third round draft choice for the Baltimore Orioles in 1973. After playing in the minors, he debuted professionally in 1977, being named the AL Rookie of the Year. Murray had a remarkable career from his first start to 1988, becoming a yearly candidate for MVP, twice runner up. In 1983, he helped his team in the World Series but in 1988, he was traded to the LA Dodgers with a great career until signing with the New York Mets in 1992 on a two-year contract although the team struggled. From 1994 to 1997, he played for the Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, Anaheim Angles, and Los Angeles Dodgers but his strong presence at the plate was gone. Then in the summer of 1995, Murray had his 3,000th hit, won game three of that year’s World Series, and just a year later, hit his 500th career home run. Murray retired in 1997 but was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.
