Born Ferguson Arthur, he is commonly called “Fergie.” For most of his 19-year career, he pitched for the Chicago Cubs although he got his start in 1962 with the Philadelphia Phillies  He also played with the Texas Rangers. At age 22, he debuted in 1965 but was traded a year later to the Chicago Cubs. During his first year with that team, he became a starter, recording 20 wins, a 2.80 ERA, and getting 236 strikeouts. He also came in second for the Cy Young Award and played in the All-Star game. While participating in the 1971 All-Star game, he was voted at number seven for MVP, was the Cub’s first recipient for the NL Cy Young Award, and the first Canadian to win the Cy Young Award in baseball’s history. At the close of the 1973 season, he was traded to the Rangers, achieving his personal best with 25 wins. While playing the Oakland Athletics in 1980, he had his 250th win but shortly after, was caught going through customs with cocaine, marijuana, and hashish, leading to an indefinite suspension although two weeks later, he was reinstated. Although he retired in 1983, he retired but pitched two seasons for the Inter-country Major League Baseball League and London Majors.
