Gary Carter Bio- Called “Kid”, Carter was a third round draft pick in 1972 by the Montreal Expos as a shortstop. Prior to acceptance, he had signed a letter of intent for football with UCLA but chose baseball instead. Initially, he played as shortstop but while in the minors, they switched him to catcher. He met with success and was named Sporting News’ Rookie of the Year. In 1974, he was called to play against the NY Mets in a doubleheader and while the game was lost, his skills were realized when he caught Carew’s ninth inning fly for a 6-3 victory. Back in the minors, he caught some but primarily played right field, leading him to be added to the AL All-Star team. After Barry Foote was traded, Carter became starting catcher. Along with the Expos, Carter played for the NY Mets, San Francisco Giants, and then back to the Expos. Some of the major accomplishments in his 19-year career include induction into the NY Mets Hall of Fame in 2001, induction into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, also in 2001, recipient of three Gold Glove Awards, and induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in 2003.
