Joe Girardi Bio-

In college, Girardi played quarterback but was also the baseball team’s catcher.  After the Chicago White Sox noticed him in 1998, he signed a MLB contract with the team in 1989, staying with the team until 1992.

Then in 1993, Girardi was snatched up in an expansion draft with the Colorado Rockies, playing with them through the 1995 season but then being traded to the New York Yankees.  From 1996 to 1999, he was the starting catcher, assisting the team with 1995, 1998, and 1998 World Series wins, earning him World Series rings for each.  His skills made him one of the best catchers in the MLB, having caught the no-hitter game pitched by Dwight Gooden in 1996 and the perfect game pitched by David Cone in 1999.  In 2000, he returned to the Chicago Cubs, being named to the All-Star team.

Broadcasting of the game scheduled against the St. Louis Cardinals in 2002 was cancelled after Darryl Kile was found dead with Girardi making the announcement to fans.  A year later, he played with the St. Louis Cardinals but after returning to the NY Yankees’ 2004 spring training, he decided to retire.

He became a professional commentator for Fox but then had several years in management for the Florida Marlins, being named NL Manager of the Year, and today, he is a manager for the New York Yankees.  The best place to find a Girardi rookie card is on eBay and other auction sites although sports memorabilia stores are also a good resource.
