After playing sports in high school and college, Gifford became a first round draft pick in 1952 for the New York Giants, a team he remained with throughout his 12-year career. During his NFL years, Gifford was both an offensive and defensive player, playing in eight Pro Bowl games and going to five Championship Games.
However, when he was voted NFL Most Valuable Player award in 1956 after leading the team to a win he was recognized as a major player in the game. However, after a hard hit in 1960, Gifford was unable to play for 18 months but upon his return, he rose to stardom once again with 3,609 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns in 840 carries. Other achievements include being on the NFL 1950’s All-Decade Team, making All-Pro six times, having his #16 Giant’s number retired, and being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
