Robinson was the first black MLB player in the modern era, debuting in 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers.  Along with being involved in track and field and playing college football, he served in the US Army and most importantly, was influential in breaking down color barriers in the world of professional baseball.  Initially, he played with the Negro leagues as shortstop to include the 1945 Negro League All-Star game but when the Boston Red Sox held tryouts, he showed up only to be humiliated about his color.

Finding the Dodgers were more open to white and black players, he tried out and signed on to play ball.  However, the contract would not be publically announced until October of 1945.  During his MLB career, some of his achievements include playing in six World Series, being a key player in the 1955 World Championship win, playing in six consecutive All-Star games, receiving the MLB Rookie of the Year Award in 1947, NL MVP Award in 1949, and in 1962, being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In 1997, MLB retired Robinson’s number 42 jersey not only for the Dodgers, but all Major League teams.  While some of the newer Jackie Robinson baseball cards can be found online through sites such as eBay, the older and rarer cards are typically sold by professional dealers.
