Standing at just 5’7”, Morgan was commonly called “Little Joe.” However, he stood out in high school as a solid baseball player, leading him to sign as a free agent to the minors in 1962. Morgan started playing for the Houston Astros but being known somewhat as a troublemaker, he was traded in 1971 to the Cincinnati Reds. While not a power hitter, Morgan was fast, helping the Reds to realize games could be won with speed over power. From 1972 to 1970, he played in eight All-Star games in a row and helped the team to a World Series victory by driving in the winning run in game seven.
Morgan was also named NL Most Valuable Player award in 1975 and 1976 and became the first person to play second base to win the MVP back-to-back in the history of MLB. Some of his other career achievements include winning two Gold Glove Awards and upon retiring in 1987, being inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame. Joe Morgan baseball cards are sold on auction sites, other online sites, and through local stores.
