Johnny Mize Bio-
An autographed 1952 Topps Johnny Mize Baseball Card with a PSA/DNA grade can be purchased for approximately $175 while a 1988 Pacific Baseball Legends Card for the St. Louis Cardinals typically sells for about $60. In College, Mize carried a number of records and was known for his excellent fielding ability.
He started playing for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1936, commonly referred to as “The Big Cat” during which time he led the NL with a .349 batting average. However, instead of focusing on batting average, Mize began to focus on power hitting and in 1939, he led the NL in homeruns. Although he played well for the Cardinals, he was traded in 1941 to the New York Giants. He then went into military service in 1943 until 1945, going back to play for the Giants in 1946 and although a broken toe affected his game slightly, he forged forward to hit 25 homeruns, tying for the league’s lead position. Mize had some incredible years in MLB but from that time until the year he retired in 1953, he was used more as a fill in or part-time player.
A few of his many accomplishments include winning five AL pennants and World Series, holding the MLB record for most times hitting three homers in a single game, and one of just a few players to include Babe Ruth to set this record in both the American League and National League.
However, his most cherished achievement was being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981.
