Juan Gonzalez  Bio-
In 1986, Gonzalez signed as a free agent with the Texas Rangers while still in Puerto Rico and just 16 years old.  With incredible strength but also a quirky personality, he was nicknamed “Igor”.

From 1986 to 1990, he played in the minors and while his start was slow, his performance quickly picked up.  At 21, he became a starter and when he and Sosa were being considered for centerfield, the Rangers chose to keep Gonzalez.  He became the AL homerun champion the following year, chosen to play in the All-Star team, voted fourth for the 1993 AL MVP, and became the recipient of his second Silver Slugger Award.  While 1991 proved to be a tough year for Gonzalez, 1996 to 1998 was outstanding to the point of being listed as having the highest slugging percentage ratio to on-base percentage in the history of MLB by the New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract.

Gonzalez had many other accomplishments such as being the first five-time winner of the Rangers Player of the Year Award in 1999.  After telling fans if he were not elected to the 1999 All-Star game his name would not be added to the roster, he was passed over for an invitation to play and when his Ranger’s uniform pants were too large for him, he refused to dress out for the Hall of Fame exhibition game.  Although retired, there is something unique about buying a Juan Gonzalez rookie card, whether from a brick and mortar store or online from eBay.
