Richie Ashburn Bio- Nicknamed “Putt Putt”, as well as “The Tilden Flash” and because of his light blonde hair, “Whitey”, Ashburn was one of the most respected and loved players in the Philadelphia Philly history.  Ashburn was considered one of the famous “Whiz Kids” associated with the NL 1950 Championship.  He played MLB for 15 years, 12 of those being center fielder for the Phillies.  He also played with the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets.  During his MLB career, he set records, won awards, and had some unique experiences.

For instance, in a 1957 game, his foul ball hit the sports editor of the Philadelphia Bulletin Earl Roth’s wife, breaking her nose.  As if that were not bad enough, as she was being taken away on a stretcher, he hit another foul ball, hitting her again.  Even so, Earl, his wife Alice, and Ashburn remained lifelong friends.  He also accumulated more than 2,500 hits in his career, served as the Met’s first representative to an All-Star Game, led the NL twice in batting average, had his number 1 Phillies’ jersey number retired in 1979, and in 1995 was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.  Any Richie Ashburn baseball cards, whether purchased through eBay, other online websites, or sports memorabilia stores are considered great investments to enjoy.
