Value of Roberto Clemente Rookie Cards

The price of a Roberto Clemente rookie card is determined by a few factors. The condition of the card or cards is vital to its value. Roberto Clemente Bio- He started in the minors but after scouted, he became a first round draft pick for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1954.  In his first professional start months later, he hit a double-header but became frustrated when racial tensions arose.  Then, injuries from a car accident kept him out of several games but his defensive skills were noticed.  Clemente played Puerto Rican baseball too but in 1958, served in the Marines, helping him become physically stronger but after returning, another injury, followed by surgery affected his 1965 season.  Throughout the 1960s, he excelled, leading the NL in batting average, being chosen for every All-Star game, the recipient of the Gold Glove Award, and being voted MVP for his contribution in the 1971 World Series.  In addition to baseball, Clemente was involved in charity work.

In 1972, he arranged emergency relief flights into Nicaragua after a massive earthquake but decided to travel on a fourth flight after the first three had been diverted by corrupt Somoza government officials.  Sadly, mechanical problems and excessive weight for the Douglas DC-7 brought it down soon after takeoff.  The pilot’s body, some of the fuselage, and a flight case belonging to Clemente were the only things ever found.  Rather than attend the memorial service, catcher Manny Sanguillen traveled to the crash site, diving into the waters to look for his longtime friend who was never found.  When buying a Roberto Clemente rookie card on eBay or through memorabilia stores, people have a piece of MLB history for a man with a huge heart.
