Ron Santo Bio- In 1959, Santo signed with the Chicago Cubs as a free agent, making his MLB debut in June of 1960.  Quickly, Santo had 41 third base double plays, setting a new team record and leading the NL in assists, something he did each year through the 1968 season, being a nine-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove Award recipient.  After the 1972 MLB strike, he invoked his right not to accept an intended trade to the California Angels under the 10-and-5 rule whereby players with 10 years tenure and the last five with the same team could decline any trade although he was traded to the Chicago White Sox as a designated hitter, something of which he had no interest.

In 1980, Santo became eligible for election into the Baseball Hall of Fame but having less than 4%, he did not quality but by 1998, he had 43% of the ballot.  Unfortunately, he was passed over for approval but in 2007, the HB 109 was adopted by the Illinois House of Representatives who encouraged the Veterans Committee to elect him to the Baseball Hall of Fame.  Many people were unaware that he struggled with diabetes, which resulted in the lower half of his right leg being amputated, and his death, along with bladder cancer in 2010.  Buying Ron Santo baseball cards online through sites such as eBay is a great way to own a piece of MLB history.
