Thurman Munson Bio-Munson was a fourth pick for the 1968 MLB Draft as catcher for the New York Yankees.  He played with the Minors and batting .300 in his two first seasons, he was noticed by the Majors as a serious MLB prospect.  His first professional appearance was in 1969 when he was starting catcher.  Then in 1970, he finished a full season, followed by receiving the 1970 Rookie of the Year Award with a batting average of .302.  Munson had a gift for inspiring other players and keeping things in check.

As a result, he was named “Team Captain”, being the first Yankee player to hold that position since Lou Gehrig.  During 11 years with the team, he played a key role in two consecutive World Series wins and left a permanent mark on the world of professional baseball.  Sadly, Munson was killed while practicing landings in his Cessna airplane, one purchased so he could fly home during the off season.  Two other passengers escaped with burns but with Munson’s legs pinned by heavy debris, smoke inhalation and heat ended this talented player’s life in August 1979 at age 32.

His number 15 was retired, a plaque placed in Monument Park in his honor, and his locker, as well as a bronzed set of his equipment donated to the Baseball Hall of Fame.  Thurman Munson baseball cards can be found all over the internet, to include eBay, each being a priceless piece of MLB history.
