Tris Speaker Bio-
Nicknamed “The Grey Eagle” and “Spoke”, Speaker was an all-around athlete who was quickly noticed by the owner of a Texas League in 1906.  Although he had his heart on playing professionally, he knew his mother would never consent since she equated the baseball draft as being forced into slavery.  However, the Texas League owner sold him to the Red Sox for a mere $800.  In 1907, he played seven games for the team and the following year, was traded to the Little Rock Travelers, batting .350.  However, the Red Sox purchased Speaker’s contract back, giving him the opportunity to play in 31 games.  Speaker would also play for the Cleveland Naps, setting multiple records and being the recipient of many awards.  For instance, Speaker had the most career doubles with 792 for that error, he had the fifth highest lifetime Major League batting average of .345, he led the AL in slugging percentage one time, on-base percentage four times, and hits one time.  Then in 1937, he became an inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame.  Because of his extraordinary ability as an outfielder, many fell he was a man ahead of his time.  Tris Speaker baseball cards are readily available through eBay and other sites, definitely something not to overlook.
